Preparation for Rural and Remote Education Program (Caloundra, QLD)

Perhaps you have a desire to step out of your comfort zone and embark on an adventure? Or a desire to explore Australia while working in a rural or remote location?

ECT4Health has designed a 5-day program to prepare you for some of the challenges of working in rural and remote locations and aims to provide you with the confidence to explore these work opportunities.

This workshop will provide information on chronic and acute presentations, as well as primary health care and considers the needs of a nurse in a rural or remote setting. This will include emergency presentations and chronic health conditions.

There is no competency component to this workshop. It will be up to the individual nurse on completion of this workshop to determine their scope of practice.

This program is a great opportunity to network with other nurses about to embark on rural and remote contracts and form supports with like-minded colleagues.

Day 1 

• Scope of Practice – overview for Rural and Remote areas
• Cultural safety in health care
• Introduction to Primary Health – the Well Health Checks
• Sexual Health Overview
• EENT assessments – looking in Ears, Eyes, Nose and Throat

Day 2

• Understanding the Deteriorating Patient – Shock
• Understanding the Deteriorating Patient – Short of Breath
• Understanding the Deteriorating Patient – Chest Pain
• Primary and Secondary Assessment in Trauma
• Practical Skills – The Physical Assessment and Airway

Day 3 

• ALOC – raised ICP – GCS and causes of ALOC
• Diabetic Emergencies – lows and highs
• Respiratory Emergencies – Asthma/Pneumonia
• Cardiac Emergencies – MI management and drugs
• Rhythm Interpretation – Practical Walk Through

Day 4

• Understanding Hypertension and Heart Failure
• Renal Disease Understanding renal pathology
•  Intraosseous Cannulation – Theory
• Practical Skills –  Intraosseous Cannulation

Day 5

• Fever and Sepsis – APSGN/RHD
• Suturing Infiltration and Techniques - Theory
• Practical Skills – Suturing
